China removes tariffs on 98% of goods from 16 countries

International Business News – The website of the South China Morning Post reported on September 5 that China has removed tariffs on 98% of goods imported from 16 least developed countries, most of which are African countries.

According to reports, Jamie Alexander Macleod of the Firoz Largi Institute for African Studies at the London School of Economics said the move was “a hopeful start if China is accompanied by targeted propaganda, investment and support to help these countries diversify their exports, then this beginning may have a greater impact.”

“This is one of a number of things China has announced, along with reducing the debt burden of African countries,” said Carlos Lopez, a professor at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
