Iran formally applies to join BRICS

International Business News – According to a report by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency on the 27th, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said at a press conference that day that Iran has officially submitted an application to join the BRICS.

Khatibzad said that the BRICS countries have established a creative cooperation mechanism covering a wide range of aspects. The total population of the five countries accounts for more than 40% of the global population, and the ratio of the total GDP to the global GDP has increased from about 8% in 2001 rose to 23.2% in 2019. Iran has held a series of consultations with BRICS countries on applying for membership, hoping that Iran’s participation will add value to all members.

At the high-level dialogue on global development held on the 24th, Iranian President Raisi expressed his expectation to join the BRICS. Leahy said that Iran can become a “sustainable partner” of the BRICS countries, using its own geopolitical and economic advantages to connect the BRICS countries with energy sources and important markets. Leahy believes that in the face of many crises such as the global new crown epidemic, climate change and international conflicts, the BRICS countries should strengthen cooperation, overcome current problems through multilateralism mechanisms, and achieve common development and world peace.
